Chioma Ufodike is a Fellow of Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA) and leader in Finance, Regulatory Compliance, Risk management, Governance and Forensic Accounting, with over twenty-three years of experience spanning across various industries.
Chioma is currently the Chief Compliance Officer for Olympia Trust Company and oversees regulatory compliance and policy management across all lines of business. Chioma has served on the Board of non-profit organizations and Crown corporations. She currently Chairs the Finance & Audit Committee of the Agricultural Financial Services Corporation, is currently serving as a Director for the Alberta Teachers Retirement Trust (ATRF) Board, the CPA Education Foundation Board and a Nominating Committee Member for the CPA Alberta Achievement Awards. She previously served as the Treasurer & Chair, Finance & Audit Committee for the Lougheed House Conservation Society - a Canadian not-for-profit organization
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology and a Masters in Forensic Accounting (MFAcc). She is also a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and is a graduate of the Directors Education Program (DEP) from the Institute of Corporate Directors at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.
What are some of the key skills and knowledge you acquired during the MFAcc program that are still important to you today?
Being a graduate of the DIFA and MFAcc programs, I give credit to both for further developing my investigative mindset and critical skepticism; skills that are essential for forensic accountants. The educational emphasis on investigative skills and techniques, big data analysis, and expert-witness testimony established a foundation of knowledge that I've come to use time and time again. These skills collectively empower forensic accountants to play a critical role in investigations, legal proceedings, and the pursuit of justice.
What were some of the most valuable lessons and/or memorable experiences from your time at MFAcc?
Participating in mock trials and the opportunities to network with other professionals were among the most valuable lessons and memorable experiences from my time in the program. These experiences not only sharpened my investigative skills, but also expanded my professional network, paving the way for meaningful connections and opportunities in my career.
What advice would you give to professionals who are looking to pursue a degree and career in Forensic Accounting?
Do it! This highly specialized area of accounting can and will take you many places. The ability to be a storyteller using numbers and help organizations design internal controls to reduce fraud is incredibly valuable in today's everchanging business landscape. It not only offers a unique perspective on financial analysis but also opens doors to exciting career opportunities where you can make a tangible impact in preventing financial crimes.
Are there any major accomplishments or achievements you would like to share with us?
In 2021, I was honored to be awarded the Fellowship of Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA), which is the highest designation within the CPA profession. This achievement represents years of dedication and expertise in the field of accounting, highlighting my commitment to excellence and professional growth.
